What is the United Maine Coon Cat Rescue League?

The United Maine Coon Cat Rescue League is a 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit, volunteer organization made up of breeders and fanciers of the Maine Coon Cat.

UMCCRL was created to fill a need to educate the public on spay and neuter, and proper cat care; and to provide rescue, foster care, and placement for homeless Maine Coon Cats.

What is a Maine Coon Cat?

The Maine Coon is a medium or large cat that comes in every color and pattern except pointed (like a Siamese).

They typically have large ears set high on their head, approximately one ear width apart. Their ears are well-tufted and sometimes have lynx tips.

The Maine Coon's coat appears shaggy, shorter on the back, longer on their sides and stomach, giving an overall image of a big cat with long hair.

They have a big bushy, or long flowing, tail; longer hair around the backs of their rear legs (britches); and large feet with tufts.

Their eyes are large and round. Their muzzle is box-like. Some Maine Coons have a wild (feral) look and appear angry. This is only appearance; the disposition of the Maine Coon is that of a Gentle Giant.

How can I adopt a rescued Maine Coon Cat?

You must be willing to provide love and safety for the lifetime of the Maine Coon Cat you are adopting.

You have to agree to provide necessary veterinary care, food, love, and play time to keep the cat healthy and well-adjusted.

All prospective owners are asked to complete an application and are screened to insure the most suitable and successful placement possible. Completion of our application also acknowledges agreement with the terms of adoption outlined at the top of the form; please read it carefully. A donation is required with every adoption to help defray the costs of placement.

When a cat is in need of placement, we review our applications and contact any potential matches. We also encourage you to visit our page listing cats seeking placement and to e-mail us if you are interested in a particular cat.
